Helyettesíthető-e a természeti és az ember alkotta tőke, avagy a technológia mindent megold?
Ez a tanulmány egy rövid kommentár Herman Daly e lapszámban megjelenő írásának második állításához, miszerint a természeti és az ember alkotta tőke alapvetően kiegészítő és nem helyettesítő viszonyban állnak. A kommentár bemutatja, hogy miért vezet ez a kérdés a technooptimista–technopesszimista vitához, és miért fontos e diskurzuson túllépni. Amellett érvel, hogy valójában a technológiai változással kapcsolatos előfeltevéseinktől függ az, hogy a helyettesíthetőség kérdésére milyen választ adunk.

Are natural and man-made capital complements or substitutes, or does technology solve everything?
The present paper is a commentary on Herman Daly’s paper that appears in this issue; more precisely, on his second claim which states that natural and man-made capital are primarily complements and not substitutes. My commentary depicts why this issue leads inevitably to the techno-optimist versus techno-pessimist dispute, and why it is important to transcend this discourse. It argues that, in fact, it is our presumptions about technological change that determine our standpoints about the issue of complementarity vs. substitutability.
